SPAR 8k La Pulente

The last of the series Spar road race series events took place on a new course at La Pulente along the five mile road at the weekend.  The early leaders in the 8km race were Jamie Barker and Sam Firby.  However, Dave Holmes tucked in behind the leading duo, waiting to pounce.  He made his move just after the halfway mark and opened a gap which neither Firby nor Barker was able to close.
Holmes was a clear winner in 27 minutes 25 seconds, ahead of Barker and Firby who dead-heated for 2nd place in 27 minutes 43 seconds.  The run of the day award went to 14 year old Philip Maguire, who ran strongly to finish in 7th place in a time of 29 minutes and 22 seconds, just outsprinting a clutch of top veteran athletes.
Arlene Lewis finished 12th overall and was the first female home in a time of 31 minutes 9 seconds.  “It’s been a good race for Scottish runners with Dave Holmes and I coming in as first man and first woman today” said a happy Lewis after the race.  Super veterans filled the minor placing in the ladies event with Sarah Corcoran (2nd) 35 minutes 29 seconds, just getting the better of Sue Le Ruez (3rd) who finished in 36 minutes 58 seconds.
