The Masters’ Year 2017 – Update

Jersey has a number of master athletes competing in Area, National, European and International Competitions during each year.

In February Pat Stanley (W70) competed in the Southern Counties Indoors T + F Championships at Lee Valley and came away with Gold in the 200m.

March saw Carole Derrien (W75) and Pat (W70) travelling to Daegu, South Korea for the Word Indoor Track and Field Championships. Although “Indoors” Carole’s events, discus and hammer were held outdoors, with the heavy weight being held indoors. Carole coped admirably with the foam surrounding the circle and threw the weight to achieve the Bronze medal.

Pat achieved 4th place in the 200m final in Daegu.

The British Masters Track and Field Championships were held in Birmingham on 24 and 25 June. Pat competed in the 200m and 400m obtaining Gold in both.

The major outdoor competition for both Carole and Pat was the European Track and Field Championships held in Aarhus, Denmark. The weather – sunny and warm (at times), windy (nearly always) and torrential rain (more often than not) was the order of each day.
Carole competed In the heavy weight, discus, hammer and throws pentathlon. She was successful in the heavy weight and came away with Silver. She was 4th in both the hammer and throws pentathlon and 6th in the discus.
Pat was 8th in the 400m Final and although competed in the 200m she was unable to make the final. The eventual winner of the 200m posted an incredible 31.5 secs!!! An indication of the very standards in the Masters Championships.
Andrea and Tony Banks both in the 40 age groups were also in Aarhus, both competing in the 10K and Marathon. In the 10K Andrea won a bronze medal and Tony was 12th. In the marathon on the final day Andrea was 6th and Tony 11th. Both ran exceptionally well.
Andrea Banks also competed in the Birmingham International Marathon in October and her second place was rewarded with a prize of £1,000. Her husband Tony placed 8th in the men’s race.

The 2018 Masters Internationals are both in Spain – the European Indoors in Madrid and the World Outdoors in Malaga. Viva Espana!
