The JSAC cross-country season got underway at the weekend at Les Creux park. In mild, cloudy conditions the four lap, 5.6miles senior race was led at the start by Jon Coote. However he was overtaken on the second lap by a group including teenage sensation Sam Maher who pulled away from the others in the group to win in a time of 33 mins 4 secs, lapping nearly half the field and winning himself the “run of the day” award. Just further back in second and third places were fellow teenagers Finlay Wright and Phil Maguire posting times of 33.28 and 33.50 respectively.
Tenth overall and first woman home was duathlete Katie Thompson, the recent JSAC half marathon winner, in a time of 37.06. Second place went to Andrea Banks in 40.30 and third to Sue le Ruez, running her last race before her 60th birthday, in 44.19.
There were good runs from several junior athletes with 12 year old Jack Kennedy leading the way with a very good time of 16.55 over two laps.
