The Jersey Spartan spring 10k sponsored by GymClub.com was run from outside the Radisson Hotel to St Aubin and back at the weekend. Happily the rain stayed away and the 126 runners enjoyed the spring sunshine.
There were close finishes in both the men’s and women’s races. Bruno Francisco just got the better of Tom Perchard in a sprint finish to win in 33 mins 16 secs, a course record, against Perchard’s 33-23, with veteran Dave Ibbotson, on the comeback trail, recording a good 34-58 in third place.
Jo Gorrod was severely tested in the women’s race by Sam Lee. They slugged it out, neck and neck before Gorrod made a significant break in the final kilometre. Despite Lee’s best efforts, Gorrod held on to win in 38-13 against 38-19 for her second-placed rival. Arlene Lewis produced a solid performance to finish third in 39-33.
Age group winners in the men’s categories were Elliot Lincoln (40+) in 35-21, Nick Gorrod (50+) in 36-28 and Terry Rumney (60+) in 43-13 and in the women’s categories; Rebecca Thompson (35+) in 41-31, Sylvia Thompson (45+) in 42-01 and Sue Le Ruez (55+) in 45-54.
The prizes were presented by race commentator and well-known actor/entertainer Stevie Ocean who kept the audience and competitors amused.
