Fantastic weather for the Jersey Spartan Athletic Club Championships last Sunday resulted in record entries for the event with many personal bests being achieved. More than 120 athletes ranging from the ages of 8 to 60 competed in the annual competition proudly sponsored by Santander.

In the minis competition, which consists of athletes aged U9 and U11, the U11 girls events were particularly exciting with 12 girls competing in the high jump and 22 in the Long Jump! Lucy Woodward won the long jump with her best jump of 3.63m. Kirsty Ludlum won the 600m girls race convincingly and shows great promise as a distance athlete. U11 boy Archie Barnes won two gold medals in the cricket ball throw and 60m sprints.

The club has a very strong U13 group of athletes and so there were some very exciting, keenly contested events. The U13 girls 100m sprint produced one of the races of the day, with Olivia Allbut and Maya Shobbrock – Walton both producing personal best times, but were just beaten by the younger athlete Molly Carre who took the gold in a pb of 13.8sec. In the girls high jump Connie Barnes achieved a new pb of 1.4m to win gold. Laura Spencer also jumped a pb of 4.47m to win the long jump. U13 boy Evan Campbell showed his versatility as an athlete by winning 3 gold medals, in the shot, long jump and hurdles. In the 800m race gold was won by talented athlete Ben Le Rougetel, however Isaac du Val set a new pb to take silver, after having won gold in the 200m and in the 1500m earlier in the week. Harry Larcombe-Strong, newcomer to the club, picked up two gold medals, winning both the javelin and discuss.

There were some excellent performances too in the older age groups. In the U15 boys Edward Cook showed how being coached by club GB athlete Zane Duquemin has helped his throwing by setting two pb’s whilst winning the hammer, shot put and discus. Josh Daniels achieved a well deserved pb of 1.62m in the high jump to win and also took gold in the triple jump. The 800m produced one of the fastest races of the day between U15, U17 boys and a veteran athlete. U17 Finlay Wright won the gold, leading from the front, whilst Max Le Feuvre improved on his pb for the 2nd time in the week to take silver in this age group. In the same race Jack Leerson won the U15 boys age group, running a 3 second pb. U17 lady, Rosie Hill continued her excellent season, winning the 100m, long jump and coming second in the triple jump to Holly Widdowson. In this same age group Gemma Gothard won both the 800m and 300m.

U17 boy Sam Stenhouse set a new pb with every jump to win the long jump. One of the highlights of the day was in the senior long jump competition where Channel Island athletes Ross Jeffs and Dave Martin jumped as guests. Both athletes jumped over 7m and it was inspiring for the junior athletes to see such quality jumping at their club championships.
