Jersey Spartan Athletic Club Annual Bouley Bay Hill Climb – 31st December 2011
The Jersey Spartan Athletic Club final race of the year was held in the afternoon on New Year’s Eve, the Bouley Bay Hill Climb. Results here.
Unlike last year when the runners struggled through snow and ice, this year they were faced by continual rain in mildly warm conditions.
Early leader was Errol O’Driscoll, the course-record holder, a record he set 2 decades ago. He was quickly overtaken by Dave Holmes who opened up a big led over his rivals.
Holmes who’s season has been affected by injury problems, kept up a steady pace, and although his pursuers were closing the gap nearing the finish, he held on to win in a time of 6 minutes and 35 seconds runner up was Jon Coote (6.44) who just held off a sustained late challenge from fellow veteran Simon Roderick (6.47).
Fifth runner overall and first female in a time of 6 minutes 56 seconds was Jo Gorrod. Her winning margin over 2nd placed Katie Thompson (7.40) was considerable, but it was a good return from Thompson and tis was a promising performance as she had been injured for the last six months. Third lady home in 7 mins 51 seconds was Andrea Banks.
This event also attracted a number of children, the youngest competitor being Dave Holmes’s 5 year old son Luke. One junior who certainly excelled himself and hung on to the leading pack up the hill, was 11 year old William Brown who finished 7th in a time of 7 minutes 9 seconds. His superb effort winning him the run of the day award.
