Bedford Winds Push Sprinters to their Limits at SEAA Championships

SEAA U20/Senior Track & Field Championships – 5 & 5 June 2026
Competing at Bedford always demands adaptability, but the SEAA Senior/U20 Championships delivered some of the most challenging sprint conditions, with athletes facing two completely different extremes across the weekend.  Saturday brought a punishing headwind that drained momentum down the home straight, while Sunday’s powerful tailwind created a completely different technical challenge, forcing sprinters to stay relaxed and controlled at maximal speed.
Despite the conditions, Jersey Spartan AC’s Lucy Cohu produced a solid U20 campaign across both days. In Saturday’s 200m final, Lucy showed determination and composure to manage the difficult winds and crossed the line in 27.24s, securing 7th place in the South of England.  She returned on Sunday for the 100m heats, this time battling a fierce headwind. Demonstrating excellent discipline through her drive and transition phases, Lucy clocked 13.59s to finish 6th in her heat against a strong field.
Zach Saunders also faced an exceptionally demanding championship schedule, contesting five races in less than 20 hours across the Senior Men’s 200m and 100m events. Over three rounds of the 200m, Zach displayed outstanding consistency and speed endurance, progressing superbly through the rounds before producing 22.01s from the difficult Lane 1 draw in the final to place 7th overall in a high-quality competition.
Back on the track Sunday with minimal recovery time, Zach delivered another impressive set of performances in the 100m. He opened with a blistering 10.83s in the heats before returning to run 10.97s in the semi-final into a difficult headwind, showing remarkable resilience despite the accumulated fatigue from the weekend’s heavy workload.
Championship racing is all about dealing with pressure, tired legs, and difficult conditions. Over a tough weekend, both athletes showed great determination and proved they can compete strongly against some of the best sprinters in the South, building strong momentum for the rest of the summer season.
