2014 23rd October West Park 5k places

The Jersey Spartan Athletic Club held another of their monthly 5km road races at West Park on Thursday night. In dry conditions and a little in the way of wind, a strong pace was maintained at the front by Bruno Francisco, seemingly recovered from his good run in the Jersey marathon recently.

The leading group of eight were still together at the turn but this was reduced to three as Bruno Francisco, Dan Romeril and teenager Sam Maher began to break away from the pack. Romeril outsprinted his rivals to win in 16 mins 8 secs with Maher second in 16-15 and early leader Francisco third in 16-22. Both Romeril and Maher were inside the standard 5km time for qualification for the Island Games of 16-20. Romeril’s victory earned him the much-coveted “run of the night” award.

Rachel Rydings was a clear winner of the women’s race, never headed and this was her first victory in Jersey and promises much for the future. She completed the course in    24-00. Second woman home was Vicky Grogan in 25-04 with Andrea Marnoch, new to the running scene in Jersey, third in 25-50.
