It was quality over quantity with a field of fourteen runners taking part in the Jersey Spartan Santander 8k road race in fair conditions at Jardin D’Olivett on Tuesday evening. The first two places were filled by runners who had run the London marathon the previous month, showing that they had both returned to good running form. Former top cyclist Sam Firby took the lead early on and came home unchallenged in 29.05. A breakthrough effort by Gerrard Mooney earned him the runner up spot in 31.32 and also merited the run of the day award.

Duathlete Katie Thompson, emerged from the chasing pack to record a fast time of 32.05 to claim third place and win the woman’s race. Sixth runner home and second lady was super veteran Sylvia Thompson, who recorded a personal best 32.54. Spartans stalwart Sue Le Ruez took third in 37.07.

There was a titanic battle between two politicians at the back of the field. Senator Lyndon Farnham just getting the better of Bernie Manning on this occasion. The ever-improving Manning recording a personal best for the 8K.
