Jersey Spartan recently held a 5k night-time race at West Park. In dry conditions with light winds, 35 runners set out with the temperature dropping rapidly. The race was held in conjunction with the charity Jersken which runs a home for vulnerable orphaned children in Kenya and there were several Kenyan runners who ran in the race.
First home was Dominic Maher, just beating his brother Damian by a whisker, both men recording a time of 17mins 27secs. Third home was teenager William Brown in a promising 17 38.
Jo Gorrod finished 8th overall and was the first woman home in 19 01, getting the better of Sylvia Thompson who was second in 20 30 while third place went to Claire Forbes who recorded a time of 22 32. It was a welcome return for Forbes who has been out due to illness and injury for many months, her high placing and gutsy effort winning her the “run of the night” award.
The next JSAC event is a cross-country race on a fast, flat course at Kempt Tower, 5 Mile Road, St Ouen on Sunday 15th December at 10am.
