Jon Coote won a closely contested cross-country race at the weekend at Pont Marquet Country Park. Coote and Nick Gorrod had run together from the start until Gorrod fell a few metres behind going up the steep steps on the fifth and final lap. In a thrilling finish Coote held on to that gap as both runners sprinted around lapped runner Dave Woodsford in the race to the finish. Coote’s time of 36 mins 48 seconds also won him the run of the day award, with Gorrod second in 36:54 and Phil Ahier, who had contested the lead for the first four laps, third in 37:10.
Jo Gorrod established an early lead in the women’s race, coming home unchallenged in 42:17. Sue Le Ruez’s winning streak came to an end but she still managed second in 47:27 with Sue Mawson third in 49:48.
