Tom Perchard was a clear winner of the Les Laveurs 10k, organised by the Jersey Spartan Athletic Club at the week-end. At the eleventh hour the course was changed, as the high tide meant that several hundred metres of the Five Mile Road resembled a lake. The athletes ran an out and back course from Les Laveurs through the back lanes, thereby avoiding the water. Despite a heavy hailstorm during the race, the new course proved to be popular with the competitors and will be used again in the future.
Setting a course record of 32mins 44secs, Tom Perchard took the lead from the off, winning both the race and the run-of-the-day award. Second home was Bruno Francisco in 33 51 and Damien Maher third in 35 42.
Jo Gorrod finished 9th and was the first lady home, recording a time of 38 11. Runner-up was Liz Le Guillou in 42 11 whose husband kindly helped out in a last minute scramble for race marshalls, winning himself the newly introduced “marshall-of-the-day” award.
Gemma Pirouet, who ran the first half of the race conservatively, upped the pace on the return and outsprinted former Alderney half marathon champion Dave Woodsford to take third place in the women’s race in a time of 43 22.
The next JSAC event is a 5 mile off-road event at Pont Marquet Country Park on Sunday 9th February with a 10am start.
